Get Your Story Straight, Sir Bob!

Post by Karen on Wed 21 Apr 2010 - 14:19

This article questions whether Jack the Ripper was known to the Scotland Yard police. Sir Robert Anderson replied that the police knew that Jack the Ripper was a Jewish butcher of very low class. If that is what he stated during this questioning then why does his story change from one interview to the next? His police memoirs mention that the Ripper was a Polish Jew named Kosminski, and Aaron Kosminski was a barber, not a butcher. Then in yet another account, Sir Robert always maintained that Jack the Ripper was a medical man. Maybe the identity of Jack the Ripper being a "definitely ascertained fact" would have held more water if Anderson actually managed to get his story straight from one interview to the next.

Was Jack the Ripper, the mysterious woman killer, who twenty years ago, terrorized the Whitechapel district, known to the police in London? Sir Robert Anderson, former head of London police, in a series of articles published by Blackwood's Magazine, says that not only was the identity of Jack known to detectives at Scotland Yard, but that if the police in England had the wide powers enjoyed by the police of other countries, the offender would have been brought to justice. You do not need to be Sherlock Holmes to realize that it was a case of sadism, that the dangerous maniac lived in the vicinity of the places where he committed his crimes and that he was protected by his friends who knew his terrible actions, but who would not abandon him to authorities. The police searched all the houses in the neighborhood of Whitechapel and came to the conclusion that the Ripper was a spineless individual, a Jewish butcher of very low condition. They managed to lock him up in a madhouse and put him in the presence of another Jew, the only man who had seen the Whitechapel Ripper. He was soon recognized, but he knew that the suspect was a Jew, so he refused to confirm under oath that he recognized him. There are, indeed, among the Jews of the East End of London a real solidarity. And the police, in the absence of evidence, could not refer the Ripper to the proper judicial authorities.
