A FASCINATING CRIMINAL.

"JACK THE RIPPER."
By Telegraph. - Press Association. - Copyright.

LONDON, 2nd June.

Sir Melville Macnaghten, of Scotland Yard, interviewed on his retirement, said that he had a clear idea of "Jack the Ripper's" identity. He was one of the most fascinating criminals he had ever known, and committed suicide in the latter part of 1888.
Sir Melville Macnaghten declined to reveal the secret of the criminal's identity.

[The Whitechapel murders, committed by "Jack the Ripper" caused a great sensation. They all occurred in 1888. On 3rd April a woman named Smith was killed, on 7th August Martha Turner, on 31st August a woman named Nicholls, and on 7th or 8th September a woman named Chapman. The Coroner returned open verdicts. The evidence showed that the murderer possessed surgical knowledge, his object being to get possession of certain organs. Between 1 and 2 a.m. on the 30th September two other women - E. Watts (or Stride) and C. Conway (or Eddowes) - were killed, and on the 9th November the body of Mary Jane Kelly was found, dreadfully mutilated, in a house in Dorset-street, and Spitalfields. Sir Melville Macnaghten was Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department from 1889 till 1903.]
