Portraits Of De Jong And Wives

Post by Karen on Wed 31 Mar 2010 - 17:44

De Jong or Don Juan?

In the interests of justice, we hasten to give portraits of the Dutchman De Jong and of the young women he is charged by the Dutch police with having spirited away. De Jong is in custody in Holland, and it is alleged that he married first a daughter of Mr. Juett, of maidenhead, and then a Miss Maria Schmitz, and occasioned the disappearance of both. Appended are the descriptions of the Dutch police -

Sarah Ann Juett, aged 25, middle height, speaks English only. Believed to be wearing a light brown mantle, with dress of same colour and same material. Carried a red parasol.

Hendrik De Jong, aged 32, born at Weespereatspel. Sarah Ann Juett traveled with him to Holland. They lived together last at the Hotel Sluis, at Arnheim. They left there on July 7, 1893, and have not been heard of since.

Maria Sybilla Schmitz, aged 40, robust figure, dark brown hair worn in a fringe. Probably wearing a dark dress with a white skirt, ribbed with black, and black hat. She travelled to London with De Jong in the middle of August 1893, and afterwards returned to Holland, and then lived with De Jong at Amsterdam until the end of August, first at the Hotel Rotterdam there, and after that at the Hotel van Gelder. She has not been heard of since Aug. 30, 1893.
