A Knife Attack In 1892

Post by Karen on Thu 18 Mar 2010 - 0:29

The Tuesday Morning Post has a new sensation for attempted murder believed to be attributed to Jack the Ripper. Miss Emily Edith Smith, nee Norton, a young lady of easy manners, had November 5 last, made the acquaintance of a gentleman speaking English with a strong foreign accent. She accepted his offer of a cup of tea, then kindly went home with him, in Upton Park, where he said he lived. He took her a long way through Whitechapel and, suddenly, under an arch, as she refused to go any farther, he pulled out a gardener's knife and attempted an act of the Ripper. She could get free and ran to Sutton Street, where she told the story to two women she met. The description she gave of her attacker corresponds exactly to that of Jack the Ripper. The police chief questioned her on Monday for three hours, then put the bloodhounds on the track.

Note: Dr. Alfred William Pearson was from the West Midlands of England and the Brummie accent is very strange and quite thick, to say the least. It is much different than a Cockney accent. Also, the police could not have locked up the Ripper in an asylum in 1888 when they were still looking for him in 1892.
