Frank Carter

Post by Karen on Thu 5 Dec 2013 - 19:00

I don't know if this is the Frank Carter who was mentioned vis a vis the Eddowes case. It was alleged that among Eddowes' possessions was a letter or card with the name Frank Carter, 305 Bethnal Green Road, on it. Unfortunately, I cannot find a 305 Bethnal Green Road in the 1881 Census

RESERVOIR EXPLOSION.

The inquest on the bodies of J.E. Wilson, The Huts, Mountain Ash Reservoir, and William Carter, 80, Kinnaird-street, Ynysboeth, near Penrhiwceiber, who were killed on Friday morning by an explosion at the Mountain Ash New Reservoir, was opened at the Lee Hotel,
Penrhiwceiber, on Monday morning. Frank Carter, brother of William Carter, said deceased was 46 years of age, and had been for 25 years engaged in tunnel work, and was well acqainted with explosives.
At this stage the Coroner adjourned the inquest for a week in order that the inspector of explosives might be communicated with.

Wounded but Cheery.

We are pleased to hear that Pte. Wm. Johnson, Penrhiwceiber, is progressing favourably at Ipswich Hospital. He was wounded so badly by shrapnel that it is feared it will be necessary to have his leg amputated. His father, Mr. Walter Johnson, and Mrs. Johnson, visited him last week at the Hospital.
He is quite cheery. His parents, who reside at 33 Glanlay St., have just received a letter from Capt. Frank Carter, of the Church Army, who states that the wounded man is getting on well under the circumstances. The Sister of the Ward has informed him that the patient is progressing nicely. He (Capt. Carter)
promises to keep in touch with him and do all he can to cheer him.

FIGHTING. - P.C. David Thomas preferred a charge of obstructing Avondale Street, Tyntetown, against Frank Carter and Wm. Stock. The constable said that both defendants had their coats buttoned up and were fighting. There was a large crowd surrounding them. Witness added that he had previously warned
defendants, and had prevented them fighting. - Carter said he had no wish to fight. Stock was the aggressor, and he (Carter) had nothing to do but to defend himself. He had taken out a summons against Stock for assault. - The Bench decided to proceed with this summons. - Carter then went into the box and deposed
that he had done his best to avoid a conflict with Stock. The latter, however, persisted in attacking him, and all he (witness) did was to protect himself. - P.C. Thomas corroborated that Stock was the aggressor. - For fighting, Carter was ordered to pay 10s. and costs, and Stock 15s. and costs. Stock was further ordered
to pay 20s. and costs for the assault.

List of Visitors.

The Editor of the Observer would be obliged if the lodging-house keepers would assist in ensuring the publication of a full and correct list of visitors by seeing that the forms left at their houses are duly filled up by the time the Collector calls. By doing so they will greatly assist the Editor, and also prevent disappointment
to the visitors whose names may be omitted.

PORTLAND STREET.

15, Mrs. Davies -
Mr. and Mrs. Davis and family, London; Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Morris, Birmingham; Master Arthur and Master Frank Carter, Cemp Hill, Birmingham.

Another interesting candidate for this Frank Carter is the following gentleman who is a Corporal in the Royal Engineers, and he is listed as being born in Bethnal Green.

Thanks Karen. That was what I came up with.As you know he is my candidate for Broad Shouldered man.

Today's 305 Bethnal Green Road is worth a look on Google Earth. It is at the apex of the murders, with almost direct access to all of them.

It has come to my attention that certain people are still requesting information on Frank Carter, residing at 305 Bethnal Green Road. Well, to put this baby to rest (hopefully), here is every household that lived in Bethnal Green Road. There is no Frank Carter, there is not even a surname Carter there at all. There is a Frank, but his surname is Routledge. The houses on Bethnal Green Road do not even go up to 305 - they only go up to 110.

What I find interesting with the first address (the Coffee Tavern) is the name of Wilmot. Anyone who has been researching the Ripper case for awhile will recognize the name as being attached to Wilmot's Lodging House.
