Jack The Ripper Tied To Scandal

Post by Karen on Tue 2 Mar 2010 - 18:15

I found the following article in an American newspaper:

Jack the Ripper tied to scandal

LONDON (UPI) - Three British authors Thursday exposed a Watergate-style coverup involving Jack the Ripper.
In a book on "The Cleveland Street Affair," the authors said Queen Victoria's son, the Prince of Wales, and the prime minister conspired to hush up a sordid sex scandal which reached into the highest households of the land.
The Cleveland Street scandal, they said, was inextricably tangled up with the notorious murders of Jack the Ripper, the knife killer of prostitutes in 1888. Despite "one of the most famous criminal investigations in history," he never was found.
The authors said the Cleveland Street case involved a brothel staffed by messenger boys and patronized by the brightest lights of Victorian society.
One of these was Lord Arthur Somerset, close friend of the Prince of Wales. The prince became King Edward VII and is Queen Elizabeth's great-grandfather.
Another patron may have been the Prince of Wales' son, Prince Albert Victor.
The authors said there was grave suspicion that Prince Albert was mixed up in the Cleveland Street brothel and may have had some connection with the Jack the Ripper murders.

Jack the Ripper involved in Victorian coverup.

LONDON (UPI) - Three British authors yesterday exposed a Watergate-style coverup involving Jack the Ripper and a serious threat to the British crown in Victorian times.
In a book on "The Cleveland Street Affair," the three authors said Queen Victoria's son, the Prince of Wales, and the prime minister conspired to hush up a sordid sex scandal that reached into the highest households of the land.
The Cleveland Street scandal, they said, was inextricably tangled up with the notorious murders of Jack the Ripper, the knife killer of a series of prostitutes in 1888, who, despite "one of the most famous criminal investigations in history," was never found.
Scotland Yard Inspector Frederick G. Abberline, in charge of the Jack the Ripper case, was switched to the Cleveland Street affair as soon as it became known, said authors Lewis Chester, David Leitch and Colin Simpson.
They said the Cleveland Street case involved a brothel staffed by messenger boys and patronized by the brightest lights of high Victorian society.
One of these was Lord Arthur Somerset, close friend of the Prince of Wales. The prince later became King Edward VII and is Queen Elizabeth's great-grandfather.
Another patron may have been the Prince of Wales' son, Prince Albert Victor.
The authors said there was grave suspicion that Prince Albert was mixed up in the Clarence Street brothel and may have had some connection with the Jack the Ripper murders.
Another recent book alleged that Prince Albert himself was "the Ripper."
The Cleveland Street affair was recognized as a challenge to the whole institution of the monarchy. It "opened up unthinkable perspectives, enough to make any respectable Victorian recoil."
The immediate response was to keep the matter quiet. The authors said this was accomplished with a Watergate fervor.
"The principle architects of the coverup were none other than the Prince of Wales himself and Lord Salisbury, the prime minister," they wrote. Also involved were the attorney general and many government ministers.

In both cases there are at least three constants.
Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885.
The immediate enlistment of Chief Inspector Frederick Abberline.
Henry Matthews,Home Secretary.

so if the killer was never found, how could he have been inextricably tangled up with the Cleveland Street scandal? surely they must have known his identity then, logic dictates. at the same time this means that neither Prince Albert Victor nor Dr Gull was the Ripper. since they could always be found.

In both cases Abberline was brought in for damage control, not to catch the well connected wrongdoers.
The police knew who the Ripper was.
He was not Gull or PAV.

In both cases, there is also a French madam who might be the same woman.

Caroline Hammond ne. Cotte born in France.

Mary Jane Kelly's alleged and unknown French madam from the West End. And if Mary Kelly is connected, who's to say JtR isn't?

Here, I actually agree with Mr. Hyde.
Jack the Ripper was not Dr. Gull (which I never claimed in the first place), nor was it PAV, although PAV was involved.
Jack the Ripper was a surgeon from the Midlands (who I found to be Dr. Alfred William Pearson.)
Why posters continue to confuse my readers or attempt to confuse the issues, never ceases to amaze me!!
