Abram Wigan Colliery Explosion

Post by Karen on Tue 2 Mar 2010 - 9:24

I found the full report of the colliery explosion at Abram Wigan on December 19, 1881, which caused the death of 48 miners, including John Edward Jones, husband of Ripper victim Winifred May Davies (the woman actually murdered in Miller's Court, according to Abberline). You can read the full report which starts on page 40:

Did Winifred know Mary? As Wigan is in Lancashire, maybe they knew each other from there.

On that premise, Karen, would you take a look at this Mary Kelly from Liverpool mentioned on a genealogy site, by a woman from Winnipeg. Her Mary also has a relative on the stage if you read all the posts.

How definite are you about your own identification of Mary Jane Kelly? I don't know any of her details, except that she wasn't the Miller's Court victim, and I would like to compare.
I believe the one above disappears from the record by 1891.

That is certainly very interesting and I do believe that Mary Jane Kelly had ties to Liverpool, Lancashire, and what's more, Winifred May Collis, who married John Edward Davies in 1879 moved to Wigan, Lancashire after his death in a coal-mining accident.

Thank you for that link.

I found the obituary of the mother-in-law of the woman from Winnipeg. The grandchildren are listed and I'm trying to find out which of them are her children and therefore descendants of this MJK. Four children are listed for the sons Ron and Don. She is married to Don. I think the last two might be hers. They are both on Facebook and one is a fashion designer in Toronto.

Kelly From Liverpool

Post by Karen on Fri 2 Jul 2010 - 17:11

Very interesting, and the lady in the photo is quite pretty. Have you tried contacting these individuals? If so, have them contact me through this forum. They can send me a private message or an email. I would be very interested in speaking with them.

I'm trying to contact one of them via facebook--the one I'm almost 100% sure is a direct descendant. It's been a couple of days. I'll let you know if there is a reply.

The descendants of this Liverpool MJK with her husband (from Liverpool who I believe also died around 1881) don't seem to be connected with any Royals or Masons so I'm targeting them. I figure they would be more willing to come forward as possible descendants, although they may not want to. Not to many people want to be associated with such a gruesome murder, even without the conspiracy angle.

She had two sons and here is a picture of one of her grandaughters. http://www.facebook.com/people/Erin-Keatch/732310144

One son married the daughter-in-law descended from Liverpool Mary Kelly, so this one might also be a descendant. I believe she is because the other son went to live in Arizona and she's still in Canada. She's a clothing designer in Toronto.

Maybe they'll talk to you. From my experience, Mary Kelly descendant candidates don't know, don't believe, or are settled in successful, full lives and don't care.

Here's the grandson who I'm sure is from the right daughter-in-law based on resemblance to her husband:

He is mentioned in the online obituary for the granddaughter of this MJK, Edna McKinnon.
