Superintendent William Hammond Retires

Post by Karen on Sat 29 Dec 2012 - 14:41

SUPERINTENDENT'S LONG SERVICE.

Superintendent William Hammond, who has just retired from the G Division, Metropolitan Police, has, with the exception of Superintendent Cole, still in harness, the distinction of holding a longer record of service than any other superintendent now in the Force. He joined in May, 1865, so has completed 43 years' service, and it is his proud boast that during that time he never had a day's sick leave. His first appointment was to Woolwich, where, after a stay of some years, he was promoted to sergeant and transferred to Sheerness. Being made inspector in 1876, he was moved to Commercial-street, in the H Division. After a further nine years' service he was transferred to Bow Street, and subsequently to Kilburn. He then succeeded Superintendent Fidge in the G Division, where he has served the last eighteen years of his time.
By a strange chance, Superintendent Hammond has always missed exciting events during the whole of his career in the Force. He left Commercial-street just before the Jack the Ripper crimes, and just missed the Bow-street trouble, and, in his own words to a "Lloyd's" representative, has "had a very uneventful career."
