Sergeant Phelps

Post by Karen on Fri 17 Aug 2012 - 18:10

Sergeant Phelps is mentioned on page 129 of the "Jack the Ripper: An Encyclopedia."

The Gloucester Recorder held a Special Court today for the retrial of ex-Police-sergeant Phelps on two charges of burglary. Accused was tried on the same charges last Friday, but the jury disagreed.
The question was one of the identity of a man seen by various witnesses near the scene of the burglaries. Accused swore the witnesses were mistaken, and put forward an alibi.
After a prolonged trial prisoner was acquitted amid applause.
