George Blumlein
MAN UNDER ARREST SUSPECTED OF MURDER.
Applied to Philadelphia Police, and His Talk Led to His Detention for Crime.
Philadelphia, June 24. - Inspector Joseph A. Faurot and Sergeant Gilda, of the New York Detective Bureau, today are grilling a man who is held in the Philadelphia General Hospital, suspected of being the ripper murderer who killed two children in New York.
The man, who is believed to be demented, was arrested in City Hall late yesterday, and the New York police were notified after the Philadelphia authorities had questioned him. The two New York detectives came to Philadelphia by automobile last night, and, after grilling the man for two hours, they announced that they believe the man either killed the children and is concealing the fact with insane cunning, or that if he is innocent he knows the murderer. They decided to investigate further.
George Blumlein is the name the man gave to Lieutenant Wood last night. Lieutenant Wood was in charge of detective headquarters when the man came up to him and asked for a warrant for the arrest of some one, who, he said, was threatening "to cut out his liver." For several minutes he talked ramblingly about livers and cutting up people. Then he pulled out a knife with a broken handle which he said he had taken from the man who threatened him.
Lieutenant Wood remembered the murder of 4 year old Charles Murray, who was killed in the hallway of his home at 270 First Avenue, New York, on May 28 last. The boy's liver had been cut out. Leonora Anna Cohn, 5 years old, was killed in the hallway of her home at 353 3rd avenue on March 19 in almost the same manner. Blumlein was sent to the psychopathic ward at the Philadelphia Hospital and the New York police were notified.
Faurot and Gildea said that Blumlein left New York 10 days ago under circumstances that are suspicious, and that he has an intimate knowledge of the neighbourhood in which the children were slain.
