Message in a Bottle

Post by Karen on Mon 30 Apr 2012 - 7:00

Bottle Containing Hoax Letter Picked Up on the Galway Coast.

Two or three facts ascertained later in the day tend to throw doubt on a message in a bottle picked up on the Galway coast, and reported by an Irish gentleman in a letter to the "Times" on Friday.
The letter purports to come from a stoker on the Titanic, and is as follows: -

Our ship Titanic sinking. All hope of being saved abandoned. Forward this to my dear wife, at No. 25, Stanley-road, Liverpool. - JOHN GRIMES, Stoker.

Questioned by a Press representative, the White Star Company stated that the name of Grimes was not that of any stoker on board the ill-fated vessel. Moreover, it seems that 26, Stanley-road, Liverpool, is a house which was demolished some time ago.
Altogether, it is pretty plain that some senseless person has essayed a rather cruel hoax.
