River Lea Mystery

Post by Karen on Thu 17 Nov 2011 - 20:33

A RIVER LEA MYSTERY.

On Saturday Mr. Baxter held an inquiry at the Felstead Mission-room, Bromley, on the body of a woman, unknown, which was found floating in the river Lea on Wednesday. Henry Peacock, a lighter-man, of 5, Shelton-street, Poplar, while on his barge, found the body. Police-serjeant Potter, 31 K, said the following was a description: Age, 50; height, 5ft.; complexion and hair dark; eyes brown. Dress: Long black jacket; black alpaca dress, brown petticoat, white chemise, black stockings and laced-up boots. On the person he found three farthings and a pocket handkerchief. Dr. Hope, of St. Leonard's-road, stated that he was called and examined the body. There were two wounds, one on the back of the head, and the other over the right eye. They were incised wounds, and had been caused before death. The skull was not fractured. The cause of death was drowning. Witness said he had seen the deceased walking about the neighbourhood during the last month, but he did not know where she came from. The body had not been in the water more than two or three hours. The jury returned an open verdict.
