William Stockley Convicted of Manslaughter

Post by Karen on Sat 20 Aug 2011 - 15:38

Law, Assize, and Police.

At Dorchester, William Stockley was convicted of the manslaughter of his father. The father, being drunk, threatened his son's wife, and "squared at" the son; for these offensive acts he was twice knocked down by the son; the second time his head struck the floor, and he died. The jury recommended the prisoner to mercy on the ground of the provocation; but Mr. Justice Coleridge held that the prisoner should not have struck any man, much less his own father, when intoxicated. However, the sentence was only six months' imprisonment.

WESTERN CIRCUIT.
DORCHESTER - MANSLAUGHTER. - Willam Stockley, labourer, was indicted for the manslaughter of James Stockley, his father, at Corfe Castle, on the 23rd of March. The facts of this melancholy case were, that the prisoner and his wife, with the father and other relatives, lived together, in the same cottage. The father came home in the evening in a state of intoxication, after the prisoner had gone to bed, and he began to abuse the prisoner's wife, threatening to strike her, but was prevented doing so by the prisoner's brother. On hearing what his father had said to his wife the prisoner got out of bed and came down, when the deceased abused him, and he struck his father, who fell down, when he was got to bed by prisoner's brother. The deceased in a short time came down again, and the quarrel recommenced, when the prisoner, in a passion, struck his father several blows, from which he fell down, striking the back of his head against the stone floor. He was taken up in a state of insensibility and put to bed, where he died about five o'clock in the morning. It was found on examination by a medical man, that concussion of the brain, with rupture of some of the vessels, had taken place, which caused death. - The jury found the prisoner guilty, but recommended him to mercy, and his lordship sentenced him to be imprisoned six months, the last two weeks to be solitary.

Hi Karen,

I felt I should let you know that this William was the son of James Ozzard Stockley, not your James. James Ozzard is first cousin to the Chief Inspector.

Chief Inspector James Stockley's gt grandfather John b1728 is James Ozzard's grandfather.

There were LOTS of Stockleys in Corfe Castle.

Paul

Thank you for that, Paul!

Yes, from information that I received, I was apprised that there may have been a rift in the family at some juncture. It's relieving to know that Insp. James Stockley was a relation to the murdered man, James Stockley, (it just wasn't his own father.)
