Series of Murders in Essex 1893

Looks Like "The Ripper."
Several Women Murdered.

A London despatch of August 13th says that recent mysterious murders of women give rise to the fear that "Jack the Ripper" is at work again. Three women were slaughtered in the open air in the suburbs by unseen assassins. In each case the victim was silently and swiftly killed with a knife, and the murderer vanished without leaving a trace of himself. The discovery of the murders followed within five minutes of each crime. The victims were not mutilated as in the Whitechapel cases, but the detectives ascribe this to lack of time. In one case the woman was thoroughly respectable, and of good family. Arrests were made in each case, but the only evidence against the prisoners was that they had discovered the crime and nobody else was known to have been at the scene of them. The action of the police led to severe rebukes from the judges. The crimes were more widely separated than those of Whitechapel, though all were in Essex. The authorities admit they were completely baffled.
