Curious Fatality

Post by Karen on Mon 1 Aug 2011 - 5:40

On Saturday Mr. Wynne E. Baxter held an inquest at the Shoreditch Town Hall, respecting the death of William Henry Eagles, a butcher, aged 42, formerly residing at 7, Francis-street, Hoxton. From the evidence of the widow, Police-constable 212 G, and Henry Smith, a carman in the employ of Mr. Heard, dust contractor, it appeared that on Friday, the 14th January, the deceased, who suffered from asthma, was driving home with a load of meat, having a horse that was very fast and more than he could manage. He had a fit of coughing come on which caused him to drop the reins, while in York-street, St. Luke's, the consequence being that he collided with a dust-cart and was thrown out. Percy Ladell, surgeon, St. John's-road, Hoxton, stated that he attended the deceased until his death, which occurred on the 1st instant resulting from compression of the brain, consequent upon the injuries received. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
