F.M.M. 6565

Post by Karen on Wed 27 Jul 2011 - 19:18

SUPPOSED CHILD MURDER AT HOXTON.

Yesterday Mr. Wynne E. Baxter held an inquiry at the Shoreditch infirmary, into circumstances attending the death of a newly-born male child, whose body was found stitched in a canvas bag lying in a gateway at Shap-street, Kingsland-road, on Tuesday. Thomas Edwards, residing at 44, Laburnum-street, Hoxton, deposed that on Tuesday night about half-past 10 he was passing the back of Mr. Burns' stables in Shap-street when he saw a sack lying in the gateway. On opening the sack he found an old coat, in which was wrapped a little child. He at once went for a constable, who took the body and the covering to the police-station. James Whitley, 427 G, deposed to being called to the spot and examining the sack, which was marked F.M.M. 6565. The coat was a black diagonal, without buttons. The body was removed to the Hoxton police-station, where it was seen by the divisional surgeon. Mr. Franklin Hewitt Olliver, 2, Kingsland-road, surgeon, deposed to having examined the body, and was of opinion that the child had breathed fairly well; but he could not swear to it having had a separate legal existence. The cause of death was suffocation. An open verdict was returned.
