A Boy Run Over

Post by Karen on Tue 26 Jul 2011 - 14:38

Yesterday afternoon Mr. George Collier held an inquiry at the London hospital, relating to the death of Ernest Hazeltine, aged four years, son of a bootmaker, of 74, Nelson-square, Mile-end-road. The evidence showed that at half-past four on Wednesday evening the little fellow was on his way home from school, in Bedford-street, Stepney. Several children ran across the road in front of a van belonging to the London, Chatham, and Dover railway, which was coming through Nelson-street at a walking pace. The little ones managed to clear the van, and deceased evidently thought he could do the same, but having missed his distance, the van caught him and he was run over. The driver, according to the evidence of several witnesses, seeing the child only just before it reached his wheel, could not pull up in time; but it was shown that the van was not more than three yards behind the little fellow, who was carried to the hospital, where he died in three days from internal injuries. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death."
