Suicide of a Railway Servant

Post by Karen on Tue 26 Jul 2011 - 2:07

Yesterday Mr. George Collier held an inquiry at the London hospital respecting the death of Charles Simpson, aged 67. Deceased had been a servant in the employ of the Great Eastern railway for 22 years, and was separated from his wife through his intemperate habits. On Monday he went to bed as usual, and next day, not getting up, his friends went into his room and found him undressed, with his throat cut and a razor close by. He was taken to the hospital, when he told his brother that he was mad at the time, having been drinking hard for six weeks. He finally succumbed to exhaustion on Thursday. A verdict of "Suicide while of unsound mind" was recorded.
