Accidental Death of 18 Month Old

Post by Karen on Thu 21 Jul 2011 - 23:01

EXTRAORDINARY ACCIDENT TO AN INFANT.

Yesterday Mr. George Collier held an inquest at the Bank of Friendship, Harford-street, Mile-end, respecting the death of Henry John Bircham, the infant son of working people, living at 70, Ernest-street, Whitehorse-lane. The little one, who was only 18 months old, was sent out on the 5th inst. to take a beer-can back to a public-house on the opposite side of the road. While going along a boy, who was flying a kite and walking backwards with the string in his hand not seeing the infant, knocked him down, and not being able to stop himself, fell upon him, the child's head striking the pavement heavily; when he returned home he complained very much of his head, and gradually getting worse, became black in the face. Dr. Chappell attended him for some days, and he died on Tuesday, and the result of the doctor's post-mortem examination was that both the brain substance and its membranes were diseased and congested, and there was extensive effusion of serum into the ventricles. It seemed, further, that the child had been at Guy's hospital for some time for brain mischief, and that the violence he had been subjected to on the 5th largely accelerated the mischief, and so caused death. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence.
