Accidental Death by Drowning

Post by Karen on Thu 21 Jul 2011 - 0:14

Yesterday afternoon Mr. George Collier held an inquiry at the Eagle tavern, East India-road, Poplar, respecting the death of Frederick Roper, aged 60. The body was identified by Wm. Chamberlain, of 111, Bancroft-road, Mile-end, deceased's uncle, who stated that they worked together at Seager's chemical works in the St. Leonard's-road, Bromley. Witness left deceased on Friday night in perfect health. As he did not come at his usual hour yesterday morning, witness went to his home to inquire after him, and learning that he had left at six o'clock, he made further inquiries, and finding a man had been drowned in the Lea-cut, he went there and identified his uncle. Deceased was in the habit of walking alongside the canal to his work, as a near cut. The deceased's umbrella was found open upon the surface of the water close by. It was stated that it was raining hard and blowing a hurricane at six in the morning, and a verdict of "Accidental drowning" was recorded.
