Poisoned by Hair Oil

Post by Karen on Wed 20 Jul 2011 - 1:24

At the London hospital yesterday Mr. Geo. Collier held an inquiry into the cause of the death of Rebecca Avery, which occurred in somewhat remarkable circumstances. The deceased, 2-1/2 years old, lived with her parents at 87, Devonshire-street, Mile end, and on the 14th inst. got at a bottle containing hair oil and drank about two tablespoonsful. She was given salt to produce vomiting, and was then taken to the hospital, where she died of exhaustion. The house physician stated that he found the oil in question to be a mineral oil, without any scent, of a kind frequently sold at chandlers' shops; and the salt the mother had given, instead of doing good, increased the irritation, bringing on congestion of the brain and convulsion, Verdict, "Death by misadventure."
