Man Killed By Stone Cart

Post by Karen on Mon 18 Jul 2011 - 21:14

Yesterday Mr. George Collier held an inquest at the Hope tavern, Banner-street, St. Luke's, on the body of John Philips, aged 54, a carman, who resided at 17, Wellington-street, Pentonville. According to the evidence of William Sherry and several other witnesses, the deceased on Wednesday was driving what is termed a "stone bus" (a low-pitched vehicle for conveniently stowing blocks of stone) through Macclesfield-street, St. Luke's, when he came to a part of the road where fresh, unrolled macadam had been put down, and, having to draw aside to get out of the way of another cart, his own, which contained about two tons of stones, stuck fast. To extricate his vehicle, Philips led the horse by the bridle, and, walking backwards, succeeded in pulling it clear. No sooner had he done so than the sudden impetus given to the cart took the man off his legs, and he fell, the wheel passing over his head, killing him on the spot. A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.
