Special Branch Ledgers

Post by Karen on Tue 12 Jul 2011 - 13:55

One of the entries that has recently been found in the Special Branch Ledgers in reference to the Whitechapel murders, makes mention of a "Freeman, Hardy, and Willis." Here is something interesting that I found from 1922 regarding that great shoe company:

LETTER CAUSES SUICIDE.
CORONER CALLS WRITER A "MURDERER."

ANONYMOUS SNEER.

An inquest was held at Bedford yesterday on W.H. Jenkins, manager of Messrs. Freeman, Hardy, and Willis's shop in High-street, who shot himself on Saturday morning.
An anonymous letter sent to the firm about two months ago, purporting to be written by a shareholder and complaining of Jenkins's political activity in the Conservative cause as a waste of time, was found near the body. Jenkins had written something on the envelope which the coroner refused to read.
A solicitor representing the firm said that no notice was taken of the letter and the relations between Jenkins and the firm were most cordial.
The coroner, Mr. Ritson, said he did not wish to know the writer of the loathsome letter. No earthly judge would punish the writer, but he thought he would be punished in the next world. In his opinion the writer was a murderer.
A verdict of Suicide while Temporarily Insane was recorded.
