Lunatic at Large

Post by Karen on Tue 12 Jul 2011 - 1:06

Charles Cooper, 59, a well-dressed man, described as a railway sub-contractor, of Ponder's-end, was charged at Westminster police-court, on Wednesday, as a lunatic at large at Buckingham palace. About four o'clock on Tuesday afternoon in the Buckingham Palace-road the defendant told a constable that he wanted an introduction to the Queen. He stated that his particular business with her was to inform her where "Jack the Ripper" was to be found, and where he had had his photograph taken. When the prisoner endeavoured to force his way through the palace gates the constable took him into custody. The defendant's wife volunteered the statement that he had been drinking to excess lately, and three weeks ago, when out of his mind, he was taken to Edmonton workhouse. The defendant told the magistrates that he must see the Queen, and Mr. D'Eyncourt remanded him.
