Eighth Murder in the Series

[From our own Correspondent.]

LONDON, June 26.

The belief that the series of murders which have horrified the whole of London had come to an end has been suddenly dispelled by the discovery of another mutilated body. As in all the previous instances the victim is a woman. The revolting circumstances of the latest crime leave no reasonable doubt that it is the work of the same ferocious monster who perpetrated the others.
The throat was cut, and there were subsequent mutilations performed with large and sharp blade evidently by a strong and practised hand. The body after being mutilated in the identical fashion which has characterised the previous crimes, was thrown into the Thames. The doctors state that the murder must have been recent.
The tragedy is the eighth in the terrible catalogue of crimes attributed to "Jack the Ripper." The reappearance of this mysterious and crafty assassin after his long absence has given rise to intense excitement, and the authorities are again urged to offer such a reward as will stimulate exertion to discover the author of the atrocities, and tempt accomplices, if there be any, to reveal his identity and whereabouts.

The first of the mysterious London murders was committed early in the morning of August 7 last year. A policeman found the body of a poorly-clad woman lying at full length on the pavement in the rear of old Whitechapel Church. Her throat was cut from ear to ear, and she had been disembowelled. The body was identified as that of Martha Turner, a social outcast. On August 30, just before daybreak, a policeman found another woman of the same class, named Mary Ann Nicholls, lying dead with her throat cut, and with the same brutal outrages inflicted on her body after death. The body of this second victim was found 200 yards distant from the scene of the first murder. Exactly a week later the dead body of Annie Chapman was discovered in the open doorway of a tenement house at the back of one of the Whitechapel breweries. The murderer in addition to disembowelling the corpse in the fashion adopted in previous cases, tore out the heart and laid it with portions of the viscera across the face. Two weeks later, on a Sunday morning, another disreputable woman was found butchered in a little alley in the Whitechapel district. On Sunday, September 30, there were two murders committed withing a few minutes of one another - the one in Berner street, and the other in Mitre-square. The seventh atrocity took place on November 9, when the dead body of a woman named Mary Jane Kelly, was found in Dorset-street, in the East-end. The throat had been cut from ear to ear, and the body mutilated in the most revolting manner. On November 21 an attempt was made to murder another unfortunate, but she escaped almost without injury. It has always been the belief of the East-End residents that these foul deeds were not the work of a landsman, and this mainly on account of their periodicity. They have all been attributed to a sailor making short voyages to the Continent, who is supposed to have committed the murders either immediately on landing or just before sailing. The crimes have always been committed at the end of the week, and hence the opinion shared by some of the detectives that the murderer is a drover or butcher employed on one of the cattle boats bringing live freight to London, and that he periodically appears and disappears with one of these vessels.
