Fruitless Works of Darkness

Post by Karen on Sun 5 Jun 2011 - 1:15

The most is made, in text and illustrations, of the fourth Whitechapel murder, as to which the St. James's consolingly remarks that there is no reason for panic, as there is nothing extraordinary in the crime: - "At present, there is scarcely a street in London in which it would not be tolerably easy to get twenty minutes or so for any deed of darkness in the small hours of the morning;" the number of police in London being quite inadequate to the work they are expected to do. The only remedy is to light the streets better; these crimes are essentially deeds of darkness."
