Jeremiah Hurley

Post by Karen on Mon 30 May 2011 - 21:09

Jeremiah Hurley was a witness at the inquest of the Pinchin-street Torso.

The brain of Jeremiah Hurley, more active than his body, hit upon a scheme for making one shilling yield him a perpetual income. Fortunately, however, for the young women in the West-end post-offices, Hurley's career as a capitalist was cut short at Westminster Police-court yesterday, where he stood charged with stealing money by a trick.
That trick was simple but effective. He tendered a shilling for a postage-stamp, and on receiving his change invariably discovered - to the alarm and surprise of the young woman - that he was sixpence short.
Six months' hard labour was thought by Mr. Horace Smith to be a fair price for the accused to pay for his recent life of fraud and affluence.
