Mutilated Infant Found in a Box

Post by Karen on Wed 11 May 2011 - 3:15

An inquest was held at Woolwich yesterday on the remains of a child found in a mutilated condition at 3, Ogleby-street, Woolwich. Mary Pearce, 2, Ogleby-street, whose husband is employed at Woolwich Dockyard, deposed to the discovery of the body in a box. Police-constable Rogers, coroner's officer, said he received the remains, which were wrapped in a canvas apron, and he took them to the mortuary. Steps were then taken to find a young woman named Smith, who had occupied the tenement where the body was found, and she was now under remand, pending the result of the present inquiry. Dr. Alfred Sharpe, divisional surgeon, said he found the body much decomposed. The head and arms had been severed from the body, and were missing. From the post-mortem examination he came to the conclusion that the child was stillborn. The Jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
