Harriet North

Post by Karen on Sun 8 May 2011 - 2:22

A mysterious case of stabbing is today being investigated by the police. On Saturday night two women of the unfortunate class were accosted near Belgrave-street, Euston-road, in the vicinity of King's-cross, by a man about twenty-six years of age, having the appearance of a foreigner. One of the women, named Harriet North, accompanied the man for some little distance. When at a somewhat retired spot in the locality the man suddenly raised a weapon and struck his companion. The woman screamed, and called out, "Oh, my God! what have you done?" Her assailant then escaped. North, who bled profusely, gave information to Police-constables Palmer and Stone, who accompanied her to the Royal Free Hospital, Gray's-inn-road, where she was admitted. The injury inflicted is not of a serious character - in fact, it will not be necessary to detain the woman more than a day or two. The injury discovered on examination is in the nature of an abrasion, and could not have been inflicted by any sharp instrument, such as a knife. So strong is one of the surgeon's opinion that it is not a case of premeditated assault, that he thinks the man probably was as much alarmed at the appearance of blood as the woman herself, and so made his escape.
