Murders in the Soho Underworld

Post by Karen on Mon 4 Apr 2011 - 14:27

Hunting a Murderer.

Six plain-clothes C.I.D. women may end the greatest London man hunt since the days of Jack the Ripper.

Scotland Yard chiefs have decided that the only way to solve the murder of Mrs. Constance May Hind, found dead in bed in her flat at Old Compton-street on Saturday, is to send detectives of their own sex among the underworld women of Soho.
Every available man and woman in the West End - plain clothes and uniformed - searched Soho again yesterday.
Their instructions were to examine all untenanted flats, cleaners' premises and pawnbrokers' shops for bloodstained clothing which might have been discarded by the murderer. They found nothing.

Protection "Racket."

A new line of inquiry is being followed. From the little information gathered from the underworld it seems possible that the three women who were murdered within the last seven months may have been killed by members of an organised foreign gang because they refused to pay for "protection."
Women of a certain class who visited Vine-street Police Station and the Yard have supplied meager information which leaves the police to think this theory may account for the present crime and the murder of French Fifi last November and Mrs. Cotton at her Lexington-street flat in April.
Threats of violence to women from men of Soho have increased during the last six months.
