S.G.O. and Rev. S.A. Barnett

Post by Karen on Wed 30 Mar 2011 - 7:06

The Whitechapel murders remain an unsolved mystery; but have been turned to account, first by "S.G.O." and then by the Rev. S.A. Barnett, as supplying cogent reasons for the sanitary reform of the whole Whitechapel district, so as to lessen the indirect incitements to savagery with which it now teems. There is more than a verbal connexion between barbarism and barbarity, and if we tolerate the former, we must expect the latter to accompany or follow it.

Identity and Death of "S.G.O."

Post by Karen on Wed 30 Mar 2011 - 7:14

By the death of the Rev. Lord Sydney Godolphin Osborne, a memorable figure has been removed from a scene in which he once took a somewhat prominent part. Every one of a generation back was familiar with the initials "S.G.O" which signed many characteristic letters in the Times, dealing with the Tractarian movement and its later development. Even in his retirement "S.G.O" occasionally made himself heard, and his last letter with the familiar signature appeared in the Times a few months back on the subject of the Whitechapel murders. Out of sympathy altogether with the great revival which has reasserted the Catholic heritage of the Anglican Church, Lord Sydney Godolphin Osborne spared no pains to reveal his natural bias, but events proved too strong for him, and he doubtless accepted the inevitable results of the movement within the Church, and forbore his controversial methods in his later days. The new generation knew him not, but many, friends and opponents, will regret his death.
