Eliza Phillips Dies in 1940

Post by Karen on Sun 27 Mar 2011 - 2:57

A Chelsea pensioner, Sergeant Hill, writes to say he was interested by my reference to Mrs. Eliza Phillips, the centenarian who has just died.
Her husband, a City doctor, brought Hill into the world in 1877. He was police surgeon for the Bishopsgate division; was called, as such, to the victims of Jack the Ripper.
Hill adds that one of his fellow-pensioners, Rattray by name, late 5th Dragoon Guards, will become a centenarian in a few weeks' time: but for slight deafness, he has all his faculties.
