Determined Attempt at Suicide.

A man named Joseph Thompson, a cabinet maker, living at Nanaimo, made a determined attempt to end his life on Wednesday. He hacked his throat with a razor and held his head up with both hands in order to keep the wounds open and allow the blood to flow. This not proving effective, he went to the wood-shed, procured an axe and commenced to batter his brains out. Mrs. Thompson gave the alarm, and when aid arrived, the demented man was still wielding the axe, with which he had inflicted several terrible wounds on his head. When forcibly relieved of the axe, he demanded to be furnished with a revolver, crying out that he was "Jack the Ripper." The would-be suicide was sent to the hospital in an ambulance and his wounds dressed. Despite his many injuries, it is believed he will recover.
