Marie Bailes

Post by Karen on Tue 1 Mar 2011 - 12:26

LONDON, June 1.

A sensation has been created in London by the discovery of the body of a child which has been mutilated in a fashion recalling the methods of "Jack the Ripper."
In a public lavatory at the Elephant and Castle railway station, in one of the most populous portions of Newington, a suburb on the south side of the Thames, the remains have been found of a girl, six and a half years of age. Her name was Marie Bailes, and her home was at Islington, a considerable distance away on the other side of the river. The head of the child was almost severed from the body, and the corpse had been wrapped in brown paper and abandoned.
The case is supposed to be one of murder, and a madman or an epileptic is believed to have been responsible for the revolting crime. The fullest available particulars of the discovery have been communicated to the police, and the services of 700 detectives have been enlisted in the endeavour to trace the murderer.
