Bond's Patient, Mr. Gladstone

Post by Karen on Fri 28 Jan 2011 - 19:43

MR. GLADSTONE.

Dr. Bond paid an early visit this morning to the ex-Premier, arriving in Downing-street about half-past eight o'clock. After staying with Mr. Gladstone for about 20 minutes, Dr. Bond issued the following bulletin: - "Mr. Gladstone has had a good night, and is much better this morning. - THOS. BOND, F.R.C.S."

Gladstone Resigns Due To Illness

Post by Karen on Wed 6 Apr 2011 - 9:10

MR. GLADSTONE.

The G.O.M. Resigns on Saturday, and Takes to his Bed Tuesday!

BUT IS WORTH SEVERAL DEFUNCT MEN YET!

Mr. Gladstone went to Windsor Saturday, and tendered his resignation to the Queen. Rosebery was sent for, and is now premier of Great Britain. The veteran statesman is sick in bed, but is better, and no fears are entertained respecting him. He has left the Liberal party in good shape, and if the Irish contingent is not satisfied, it is their own fault.
That Rosebery will prove the wisdom of Mr. Gladstone's choice of a successor, there is no reasonable ground to doubt. It is not a crisis, but an epoch, that the empire is passing through. God grant a safe and speedy passage.

LONDON, March 7. - Mr. Gladstone is seriously ill, as the result of a chill. He walked home from Brooks' Club, No. 60, St. James street, yesterday evening, after dining there with his late secretaries. As a result, Mr. Gladstone contracted a chill, and on reaching home had to be hurried off to bed. A physician was summoned, and Mr. Gladstone was put under treatment.
This morning his condition was such that another physician was summoned, and this afternoon one of the physicians in attendance upon the distinguished patient gave a statement to the newspapers, which indicates that Mr. Gladstone's illness is undoubtedly serious. The absence of high fever, however, indicated that there was no great danger at present.

LONDON, March 8. - Mr. Gladstone's condition is slightly improved today. His symptoms of bronchitis have not increased, and his cough and catarrh have so yielded to treatment that they have almost ceased to annoy him. Nevertheless, Dr. Bond advises him to remain in bed today. Since his indisposition, Mr. Gladstone has been visited by nearly all of the cabinet ministers and foreign diplomats, and a large number of others.

Mr. Gladstone was reported late this evening to be very much better. After leaving Mr. Gladstone this evening, Dr. Bond stated that his patient was suffering from inflammation of the throat and a troublesome cough. He remained cheerful, Dr. Bond said, and had a good appetite.
