Offending Cabmen

Post by Karen on Sat 22 Jan 2011 - 12:25

Again we must protest against the suicidal policy that some drivers are pursuing in this matter. The police reports say, John Griffith, a cabdriver, very nearly got seven days for a disturbance, and on oath, "Inspector Reid stated that he had spoken to about 13 cabmen on the subject, but none had appeared. Offending cabmen were a great annoyance to the officials, and it was quite possible to prefer six charges of obstruction every day. All that was required was, that the drivers, after being discharged, should pay 1d. and go on the station rank if they wished." Really, all men who want the stations kept open, and the other systems to follow the example should do all they can to discountenance this bullying, brutal system, that knocks a man about because he wants to secure fair play for all. We hope the spirit evinced by the magistrate of "sending men down" if their moral sense will not, will have a good effect.
