Police Constable Walter Stride

Post by Karen on Sat 15 Jan 2011 - 0:17

Police constable Walter Stride appeared at the inquest of Elizabeth Stride and stated that he was the nephew of Elizabeth's former husband, John Stride.

SKETCH AND CRIME BOOK.

Carl Braun, 20, and Joseph Dollman, 20, the first an Austrian and the latter a German subject, both described as waiters, were charged yesterday at Westminster police-court with attempted burglary at the residence of Mr. Edward Bryce Pearse, 24, Egerton-gardens, S.W.
At four o'clock yesterday (Saturday) morning, in the thick fog, Constable Stride, 145 B, noticed that some private marks, made on the gates leading to Egerton-gardens had been interfered with, and that there was wet mud on the railings, indicating that someone had climbed over. As the garden enclosure was common to a large block of mansions the officer sent for assistance, and the place was surrounded by constables before search was made.
It was then found by the witness and Sergeant Brockhurst that an attempt had been made to force an outer door at 24, Egerton-gardens. The woodwork was freshly splintered, further investigation leading to the discovery of the two prisoners crouched in an opposite doorway. One of the men said, "All right, guv'ner, we will give in." They were searched and found in possession of a chisel, a piece of candle, several thin-bladed table knives, and many keys.
Dollman had also about him a publication on famous crimes, and Braun had a rough sketch of a house and grounds which Detective-sergt. Morgan informed the court bore some resemblance to another mansion where a burglary was attempted
Prisoners had nothing whatever to say in answer to the charge, and Mr. Sheil remanded them, and wrote on the charge a commendation of Police-constable Stride for the vigilance he had displayed.

MOTOR-CAR AND CAB COLLIDE.

Arthur George Moore, aged thirty-two, chauffeur, of Tamworth-street, Fulham, employed by Lieutenant Dawson, was remanded at the Westminster Police Court yesterday accused of being drunk while in charge of, and recklessly driving, a motor-car.
Police-constable Stride said that shortly after eleven o'clock on Saturday night he heard a loud crash in Thurloe-place, South Kensington. He found that a motor-car in charge of Moore had driven into and overturned a four-wheeled cab containing two ladies and two gentlemen (the latter were two officers of the Northumberland Fusiliers.) He had no doubt whatever that Moore was drunk.
It was stated that the officers had their hands cut, but that the ladies escaped unhurt.
Mr. S. Firth, who appeared for Moore, said his case would be that his client was not drunk - that he was never drunk in his life.
Moore was admitted to bail.
