Five Year Old Murdered In Wales

Post by Karen on Thu 11 Nov 2010 - 11:38

WELSH BUTCHER'S TERRIBLE CRIME.
MURDERING A CHILD.
SHOCKING MUTILATION OF THE BODY.

A terrible murder has been perpetrated in Wales, which in its incidents somewhat resembles the Whitechapel atrocities. We take the Western Mail's report: - "The greatest excitement prevailed at Pontardawe on Sunday morning (says the paper) on its becoming known that a child named John Harper, aged five years, the son of James Harper, an annealor at the Pontardawe Tinplate Works, had been foully murdered on Saturday evening in a wood near All Saints' Church. The child was missed by his parents in the afternoon of Saturday, and as night drew on a search was instituted, the neighbours joining in; but as their endeavours proved futile, information was given to Inspector Giddings at the police-station, and he and his officers, Police-constables Harris and Hopkins were soon on the alert. Inquiries were at once made by them as to where and when the little boy had last been seen, and it proved that with another child, who is still younger, he had been during the afternoon on a bridge crossing the river, which at this spot divides Pontardawe from the wood in question, in company with a lad named Thomas Lott, who is about 18 years of age, and who is frequently employed by a butcher in the town. The search was continued, and about twelve o'clock Police-constable Hopkins came upon the body of the little child, which presented a terrible spectacle, the throat being cut from ear to ear, as well as being disembowelled. The police ascertained that the little fellow, who had been on the bridge with Lott and deceased, had arrived home in a great state of fright, saying that Lott had wished to undress him in the wood. The cottage where Lott lives with his mother was next visited, and he was taken into custody on suspicion, and has since admitted that he did the deed with a butcher's knife taken from the slaughter-house. No motive can be assigned for the crime. Prisoner will be brought before the Magistrate this (Monday) morning."

John Harper

Post by Karen on Fri 19 Nov 2010 - 18:38

At Pontardawe, near Swansea, a child named John Harper, aged five years, the son of an annealer at the tin-plate works, was murdered on Saturday evening in a wood. He had been seen during the afternoon on a bridge crossing the river in company with a lad named Thomas Lott, who is about eighteen years of age, and is frequently employed by a butcher in the town. About twelve o'clock Police-constable Hopkins came upon the body, and found the throat cut. Lott was taken into custody, and he has since admitted that he committed the deed with a butcher's knife.

An extraordinary series of crimes appears to have been committed at Tunbridge Wells. Two youths of the ages of seventeen and eighteen, called Dobell and Gower, have been arrested on the confession made by the elder of a murder and other outrages. A few months ago Mr. Lawrence, a manager at the Baltic Saw Mills, in Tunbridge, was found shot dead, and no clue could be obtained towards the discovery of the murderer. Gower has now confessed to a captain of the Salvation Army that he instigated the murder and Dobell committed it. According to this story Gower, who worked at the mills, had taken offence at some slight punishment inflicted upon him by Mr. Lawrence; and Dobell had, on Gower's instigation, lured Mr. Lawrence to a lonely spot, and there shot him through the brain. Gower's confession is apparently due to the belief that his friend was about to forestall him. The confession extends to various other crimes - robbery, arson, and attempted murder. At their lodgings, it is noticeable, were found several penny dreadfuls; and in writing to a local journal a letter describing the exploit one of the youths had gloried in signing himself "a Whitechapel murderer."
