The Jews' Views On The Murders

Post by Karen on Mon 25 Oct 2010 - 1:24

JEWS AND THE WHITECHAPEL MURDER.

The amount of attention given by the contemporary secular press to the last of a horrible series of murders, together with the avidity with which every detail, true or false, has been followed by the public at large, renders it unnecessary to devote much space to it here. We shall confine ourselves to a few remarks on the points which touch our co-religionists most nearly. At one time, indeed, it seemed as though Jews were to be more nearly concerned than any other people. That danger is, happily, now over; the spectre has been faced and throttled, the notorious "Leather Apron" - that weird product of the imagination of a journalist, inspired by the morbid creations of Poe and Hoffmann in the field of the fantastic and the horrible - turns out to be a poor, sickly person named Piser, who, at the time of the murder, was far away from the scene of it. His case is only another instance of the value of civilised judicial institutions. So inflamed was the popular mind, so convinced was it that "Leather Apron" was the murderer, that had he been captured by the crowd Lynch Law would have almost certainly been put into operation. As Piser plaintively said, he would have been torn in pieces. And not only so, but the whole Jewish quarter would have been in danger of attack. The best thanks of Jews are owing to those organs which deprecated anti-Jewish feeling.
Of course all danger is not yet over, but on the whole the probability of a Jew being guilty is vastly diminished. We hear on all sides that the brutality shown exceeds anything that could have been committed by an Englishman, and must therefore have been the act of a foreigner. This no candid reader of the English newspapers could admit for a moment. But even granting it, "foreigner" is by no means identical with "Jew."
The conduct of our co-religionists has been of the wisest. Though the formation of a Whitechapel committee, largely consisting of Jews, was no doubt prompted by a sincere wish to put an end to the career of "the red terror," it was still none the less a highly prudential step. The committee of sixteen (with power to add to their number), which meets every evening at 9 o'clock, at the "Crown," 74, Mile End Road, comprises the following Jewish names: Messrs. J. Aarons, John Cohen, Henry A. Harris, M. Isaacs, M. Mitchell, B. Barnett, S. Jacobs, B. Harris, and they have offered a "substantial reward to any one (citizen or otherwise) who shall give such information as will bring the murderer or murderers to justice." Mr. J. Aarons is the secretary and treasurer, and to him, accordingly, all communications and subscriptions should be addressed.
On calling upon Mr. J. Aarons, our reporter was informed that various subscriptions had already come in and that much was expected from a house-to-house visitation which would be made today (Thursday), from Bow Church to Aldgate, by himself, Mr. George Lusk (the president), and other gentlemen, with a view of inviting subscriptions. At the meeting to be held Thursday night, the amount of the reward was to be settled. Mr. Samuel Montagu, M.P., has also offered 100 pounds reward, presumably in his capacity as member for the district.

In a letter which appeared in the Evening News of Tuesday last, Mr. G.H. Hutt writes: On Saturday evening last, I found it difficult to traverse the streets in the vicinity of Whitechapel without observing in almost every thoroughfare, knots of persons (consisting of men, women and children), and overhearing their slanderous and insulting remarks towards the Jews who occasionally passed by. With justice to my countrymen, I may mention that the foul epithets were made use of by people of the most ignorant and dangerous class, prompted by the information they had casually obtained that a man known as "Leather Apron" had a Jewish appearance, and was wanted for the recent Whitechapel murders. Even were it the case that the actual perpetrator belonged to the Hebrew class, is it not cowardly and unjust in the extreme to calumniate a sect for the sins of one? Spotless indeed would be the flock entirely minus of black sheep. The Jew predominates in the neighbourhood where I am and have been residing for years, but notwithstanding the crimes committed by the members of our so-called Christian race average at least 99 percent. in excess of those imputed to the Jews. Therefore if they were base enough to take a mean advantage of this knowledge, and impugn and molest every respectable Christian pedestrian they chanced to meet, no doubt riot and disorder would be the result daily. "Hard words break no bones," but often they lead to that end. The Jew is certainly no coward when on the defensive, and if such conduct as I personally witnessed on Saturday last is not suppressed, the consequences may be serious indeed. My knowledge of the Jews impresses me with the belief that they are a persevering, thrifty and generous race. Clannish they may be, and it is a pity there is not more of such brotherly feeling existing among Christians; again, seldom have a I seen a subscription list opened for the benefit of a deserving Christian that has not been contributed to by the Jews. Those who forget themselves so far to insult them in the manner I have stated should put the query to each other, "What would our Christian labour market be (especially in this district) without the industry introduced by the Hebrew race?" If your space will admit of giving publicity to the remarks from a lover of fair play, it may be the means of deterring the self-imagined pure-minded Christian in abusing the people I have mentioned, and also teach him to endeavour "to pick the mote from his own eye," instead of molesting a harmless and industrious fraternity.

Re: The Jews' Views On The Murders

A great audience assembled to listen to the Delegate Chief Rabbi's afternoon sermon to working men at the Great Synagogue. As an experiment in the Judisch-Deutsch jargon, it was, on the whole, successful, Dr. Hermann only occasionally slipping into pure German, and managing the queer mixture of elements which make up this wonderful idiom most dexterously. The discourse was highly impressive, the preacher forcibly accentuating the sacredness of the oath, wheresoever taken, and the advisability of referring minor internal disputes to the Beth-din to avoid causing a [/img]. He naturally referred to the Whitechapel murders, which had come to a climax the day before, and to the malicious accusations made against the section of Jews to which many of his audience belonged. We may repeat once more, in view of the fresh horror, that nothing is more abhorrent to Jews than the idea of murder, except, indeed, the idea of mutilating the body, the [/img]. So much is this the case that the prohibition against [/img] is extended even to disfiguring the corpse in any way, either by instrument or fire, and is regarded by the Talmud (T. Chulin, p. 11 b.) as equal in importance to a Biblical statute. It is, in fact, the great argument against cremation, as the great Rabbi of Prague, cited by Dr. Hermann Adler, has well pointed out in his response.
