The Collis Woman

Post by Karen on Sat 16 Oct 2010 - 16:01

Inspector Frederick Abberline stated in his diaries that the real name of the murdered woman found in Miller's Court, was a woman whose surname was Collis.

Meanwhile, at the inquest of Mary Jane Kelly, it was ascertained by those who knew her that the victim was an artiste of no mean degree and that she also had a relative on the London stage. Kelly was known for singing Irish songs, and on the night of her death was heard singing a popular song entitled, "Sweet Violets."

I have found something interesting that I would like to share with my readers. This is from an advertisement for an evening concert, found in the "The Hackney Mercury And North London Herald" of Saturday November 27, 1886.

Could this Miss Kate Collis have been the murdered woman found in Miller's Court on November 9, 1888?

I found this very interesting. Abberline was reported to have stated in his diaries that the woman who was actually murdered in Miller's Court was Winifred May Collis. I did not find a Winifred May Collis, but did find this under the heading Dissolution of Partnerships:
